Achieving Beauty - tips from the experts
Searching for true beauty? The editors of Gentry Magazine speak with two diverse Peninsula beauty experts - a skin care specialist and a gymnast - both of whom advocate listening to your body.

Denise Spanek
While beauty on the exterior is the easiest to see, it all starts from within. Denise Spanek, proprietor of Visage body care studio in Burlingame, has spent her life studying and practicing good skin care and knows it takes a lot of work to make that outside look great. Renowned for specializing in hard-to-find, high-end products, this former marathon runner has also recently added something new for her clients and her own regime-yoga. By focusing on the skin, body, and soul, Spanek feels her clients are getting an all-around better beauty enhancing experience- and happier existence. Spanek shares with Gentry her top five beauty tips to becoming and staying beautiful from the inside out.

Oxygen Therapy
"For skin to function properly," she says, "it must have an adequate supply of oxygen. When applied to the skin, oxygen therapy (which comes in the form of a cream) breaks down into oxygen gas and water on contact. Consider it like a mini hyper-baric chamber. Every living cell needs oxygen to live, so by force feeding the skin, the face can work more efficiently to stave off pigmentation, acne, and wrinkles.

Yoga
According to Spanek, there are three things that yoga, unlike any other physical activity provides - strength, flexibility, and balance. As a marathon runner for many years, Spanek says she destroyed her knees and recently had surgery to fix the extensive damage caused by the sport. By practicing yoga regularly, she says she has more muscle definition and her body feels so much more relaxed than her days of pounding the pavement.

Good Maintenance
"Get under the care of a good aesthetician and go once a month or every six weeks," Spanek urges."Make sure to keep u the good work at home every day. And don't forget the sunscreen! Protecting yourself from the sun can mean the difference of years in the appearance of your skin."

Living a Happy Life
It may sound like fantasy in this hectic world, but Spanek suggests that laughing as much as possible and enjoying the good things in life are the keys to staying healthy and beautiful. "People who have a positive attitude tend to look more vibrant than the ones who are under a lot of stress," she notes. "And don't smoke. Even though we may not be able to smell it, we aestheticians can see the damaging effects in the sking."

Sleep
Get enough of it each and every night. Besides looking like a zombie all day, studies show that sleep deprivation can cause weight gain. If that's not enough to encourage you to push the snooze button, we don't know what can.
